Oude Munten

Welcome to Oude Munten, a catalogue of coins from my personal collection. Here I record each piece with photographs, descriptions, references, and mint locations. The catalogue is a work in progress, gradually refined as the collection is studied and organized.

Coin of the Day

Kings of Macedon. Amphipolis. Philip II. 359-336 BC. Tetradrachm.

he tetradrachm minted during the reign of Philip II of Macedon (359-336 BC) is a striking example of ancient Greek coinage. On the obverse side, the coin features a laureate head of Zeus facing to the right, a common motif used in the Hellenistic period to symbolize divine authority. The reverse side bears the inscription ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ, denoting Philip's name. A youthful rider on horseback is depicted, holding a palm frond, a symbol of victory and triumph. The design also incorporates various control marks, such as a branch positioned below the horse and the letter Π below the raised foreleg, which may have had administrative or minting significance during that era.
